LIFESTYLE DESIGN THROUGH SELF AWARENESS
Written by Arlin Moore on Nov 25, 2018
Yesterday I made a video about my top five books for lifestyle design. In this post I’d like to give my biggest tip for lifestyle design:

Self awareness.

This term gets thrown around a lot in the entrepreneurial and self development space. But I think it’s a word that not a lot of people really understand, ironically.

We might think we have self awareness about our skills and such, but there is so much more depth to it than that.

Self awareness is important because:

1. It’s the thing that gives us a true understanding of what we truly want in life, so that we are able to design our lives to get there
2. It shows us what we are good at and what we enjoy doing so that we can achieve what we’d like while enjoying the process
3. It shows us that our lives are actually already amazing as it is

So how do we develop self awareness? Meditation is huge. I have found that a daily practice of meditation, shooting for thirty minutes of silence in the morning, followed by some free form journalling really helps. While I meditate, I first become aware of my body and myself. I observe my thoughts. I do not judge my thoughts, I just notice them. Then i become aware of how my body feels. Then I look around me and I see the beauty of life around me. All the colors, all the sounds, and smells. Then I realise the connectedness between myself and my external environment, and I kind of just sit there in a really happy state knowing that everything around me has been brought to me by the universe. The universe brings you what you most truly desire, so the fact that I am sitting here means that at one point in my life, I really wanted this. And then am I am grateful. During this thirty minutes, I will observe myself, but I will also purposefully send thoughts of love and happiness to people around me, strangers, and people I care about. A thought is a powerful thing. More powerful than we think. People say that thoughts hold weight. I literally believe this. There’s a substance in the universe called dark matter, and it accounts for more than half the mass of the universe, yet scientists literally cannot figure out what it is, because it’s not made of atoms like everything else. My hypothesis is that thoughts are at least a part of this force. Thoughts and intentions. I’m aware of this and so I send my happy thoughts out into the world. Then once my meditation is over, I go into a stream of consciousness journal…

Stream of consciousness journalling is basically putting all your thoughts that flow out of you naturally onto a paper. Anything I woke up thinking about, or for some reason is just on my mind, I’ll put it on the page, and that way I don’t feel attached to keep thinking about it. Then I’ll usually direct my pen to start recognising things I am grateful for. Gratitude is the source of all abundance, because it is the recognition, the awareness that we already have what we are searching for.

Often in my meditation and journaling practice, I recognise that the thoughts or desires in my mind are a lot of the time far more trivial than I imagine in my head.

This realisation helps me recalibrate into presence and come to deeper realisations about what I truly desire, (achieving number 1)… I might have a thought in my head about an argument I had and wanting to fix it. But then I meditate and journal and realise wait… this doesn’t matter at all…

From here, I let go, and then comes a bigger more important thing, perhaps a new video idea or an idea to start a blog.

The deeper I go into meditation, the deeper I am able to connect to what I truly care about, what matters in the world. And when I get here, I can then think about how I can take action toward this. From here, I take action, because I recognise that the only way to grow is through experimentation and action. Maybe I take a wrong turn, but at least I tried.

Lastly, self awareness gives you the perspective that this entire process is what it’s all about. Not achieving a goal, but the process of achieving a goal.

Ultimately, there is no where we need to arrive… The journey is the only thing that matters.

Okay, super deep today hah!

Now i”m more aware of how deeply I think… Cool…
